TYLER — All stray animals picked up outside the city limits of Tyler, go to the Smith County Animal Control Barn.
There's no adoption facility.
So if you don't claim your dog or cat after 3 days, they euthanize them.
Deborah Dobbs with the SPCA of East Texas spoke with KETK by phone.
She says the Humane Society of East Texas is still in Tyler -- but it hasn't had a contract with the city or county to help with animal control in years.
"They take selective animals and they are 'no-kill' now. Which is great for the Humane Society. But what that means is over 10,000 dogs a year are being euthanized in Smith County," Dobbs said.
Brenda Elrod is with the Northeast Texas Public Health District.
They provide animal control for the City of Tyler and lend their health services to the county animal control.
She tells KETK the city has to take their animals to the Klein Animal Shelter in Jacksonville...
She says it would be easier if there were a closer shelter.
"It is an expensive endeavor but they're committed to taking care of it. You know we drive to Klein at least once a day, 6 days a week, if not 7 and sometimes twice if we have more animals to deliver," Elrod said.
Deborah Dobbs says both the city and the county could benefit from a new shelter they are close to building.
"The city and county both need a local facility in our city that our citizens can reclaim their lost pets. Or we can start adopting some of these animals out as opposed to euthanizing all of them," Dobbs said.
As far as what the sheriff's candidates think, Chris Green says he would rather the department focus on law enforcement than deal with animal control.
Larry Smith and Bobby Garmon feel that it is the responsibilty of the Sheriff's office -- they just need that SPCA help.
And candidate Donn Rust says a good idea would be for the Sheriff's office to have one deputy dedicated to animal control -- strictly for investigation purposes.
