TYLER — WEDNESDAY UPDATE (MAY 9TH): On Wednesday, May 09, 2012 Tyler Police Investigators arrested Lewis Bret Hampton, W/M, 01/02/1971, for two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Unlawful Carrying a Weapon.
Hampton was released today from a local hospital and was immediately taken into custody by Detectives. Hampton was transported to Smith County Jail, bond was set at $325,000.
Hampton was responsible for attacking two victims with a large knife at 7109 Richfield on Sunday, April 29, 2012.
ORIGINAL STORY (APRIL 29TH): Tyler police tell KETK that two men were taken to a local hospital after a violent altercation involving a gun and knife.
Police say around 2PM on sunday they received a 911 call of a man with a gun shooting in the area of Richfield Drive.
When officers arrived at the scece, they say they found two white males on the ground in an alley.
Officers say that Lewis Hampton, a white male, age 41, had threatened several people with a large knife.
One man, who was reportedly threatened by Hampton, had a handgun in his possession and confronted him in an effort to protect himself and others.
Hampton reportedly continued to use the knife and continued to threaten the victim and others.
Hampton eventually cut the victim with the knife at which point the victim shot Hampton.
After being shot, Hampton continued to verbally threaten and attack him so the victim reportedly shot Hampton again.
Officers say at this point, other people were able to subdue Hampton until Tyler Police arrived.
Hampton was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for two gunshot wounds.
The victim was also taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released for several knife wounds.
Investigators were called to the scene as well as the Crime Scene Unit to process the scene.
Investigators say they believe at this point that the victim was acting in self-defense.
