Veteran State Representative Chuck Hopson finds himself in a runoff to retain his District 11 seat.
His opponent’s name is Travis Clardy.
He is an attorney from Nacogdoches, and the margin if difference in their votes was razor thin.
Representative Chuck Hopson is nothing if not pragmatic. The delay in setting the Texas Primary did not work in his favor.
And Travis Clardy is pragmatic enough to know it helped him.
Hopson spent 5 of his 6 terms as a Democrat, switching parties in 2010.
He feels though, that the voters have taken that in stride.
Hopson told KETK, the biggest issue is the budget.
Both candidates believe education and a long term water plan for Texas are absolutely crucial issues next session.
But he hopes economic conditions will allow some growth and a breathing spell.
Despite his feeling that the party switch is a non-issue, politics has become a matter of litmus tests for some voters.
And that is a hurdle Hopson knows he must clear.
