Group forming to aid in campus upkeep
JACKSONVILLE — It's mid-June...and Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, the oldest junior college in the state of Texas...sits empty...and, because of the massive furloughs last month...it's beginning to look a little unkept.
"I suppose it didn't really sink in...until I heard that so many folks had been furloughed or something like that and I thought, 'Wow'...this is a serious issue,'" said Kay Lewis.
Jacksonville native Kay Lewis who went to Lon Morris for a while before going off to college...asked herself what the community could do for a place that has done so much for so many...
Lewis is responsible for the very popular Jacksonville Cares -- a group that brought awareness to driving safety for teens.
Now -- she's started another group called Loving Lon Morris.
"We spoke to the folks at Lon Morris and we said 'We want to know what your immediate needs are as far as what the folks in Jacksonville, and the surrounding area can do to help you get through the summer so that you can be ready for the fall semester,'" Lewis said.
Support is already coming in...entire church groups, boy scouts, as well as East Texans with lawn mowers, weed eaters, and any time to spare...are already volunteering to help the school with repairs, painting, groundskeeping, even help around the office...
And they can use all the help they can get.
"Such memories of Lon Morris! Let's don't lose it! Let's don't lose Lon Morris...Lon Morris has given us so much...and it's time to give back," Lewis said.
Lewis works at Day & Wallace law firm in Jacksonville. To inquire about Loving Lon Morris, call that number at (903) 586-5100.
