tyler — “Macro: The Art is in the Details,” a new exhibit at Gallery Main Street, will begin with a special Saturday evening opening reception on June 30 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the gallery, 110 W. Erwin.
Since the gallery opened in late 2009, we have enjoyed many Thursday night opening receptions, said Gallery Main Street Curator Ashley Foxx. “In a year’s time, these receptions collectively create 2,000 visits to downtown.”
In analyzing the needs of our artists and audiences, the decision was made to move our gallery receptions to Saturdays, Foxx said. “We hope the new day of the week and the extended hours will encourage even more people to experience the arts in Downtown Tyler.”
Foxx said she envisions visitors making downtown their destination point for entire evenings, adding visits to downtown restaurants and Liberty Hall to their plans in combination with Saturday exhibit receptions.
The “Macro” show will feature nearly 30 diverse works of art by more than a dozen artists. Media ranges from cast bronze sculpture to photography, assembly art, watercolor and others.
The reception will feature an opportunity to meet the artists, as well as live music, food and beverages. Attendance is free and open to the public.
Foxx said that interest in the gallery remains strong among artists, and there are many inquiries on how to get one’s work included in a show. When an exhibit is organized, a call to artists is issued, and a prospectus is posted to the gallery and downtown arts website, www.downtowntylerarts.com . Artists submit digital images of their work. Those images, stripped of identifying factors, are sent to a jury of professional artists who score each work. The top-scoring pieces are accepted for the exhibit, and the artwork that scores the highest is named Best in Show.
Admission to the gallery is free. The public is invited to view exhibits during the gallery’s hours, which are Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday noon to 4 p.m.
