NACOGDOCHES COUNTY — The largest 100% biomass plant in the country is right here in East Texas.
On Wednesday morning, representatives with the Southern Company celebrated the official "start up" of the Nacogdoches County plant, after more than a year of construction.
The 100-megawatt generating facility is located at the 14000 block of State Hwy. 204 in Cushing, TX.
The plant is powered by wastewood, which is a combination of unused wood provided by local businesses.
The wood would typically be burnt, but officials with the plant tell KETK, it will be put to good use at the newly completed plant.
18-Wheelers carry the wastewood to the facility, where it is dumped and boiled down to generate electricity.
The plant will help produce power for about 60,000 houses in the Austin area.
