Kilgore, TX — Front-end loaders and construction crews busied themselves at various tasks on a brown stretch of land where teenagers once made out.
Steel re-bar lay in piles, each spaghetti pole waiting for its burial in concrete foundations for two public schools going up on the former site of a drive-in movie theater on Kilgore’s southernmost tip.
Construction of campuses to replace Maude Laird Middle and Kilgore Intermediate schools accounts for $45 million of a $55 million bond Kilgore ISD voters approved in May 2011.
Work began March 16 and is on schedule for completion by August 2013 when pre-k, first, sixth, seventh and eighth graders will arrive at the two new schools.
“I live in Kilgore. My kids will get to go to these schools,” said Casey Beddingfield, president of supervising contractor RLM General Construction.
