Kilgore, TX — Kilgore got 1,003 acres larger Tuesday as the city council pushed its city limit north and across Interstate 20.
The annexation takes in Post Oak Road and the Liberty City Highway (FM 1252) from just west of the Texas 31/I-20 intersection to about a half mile west of Texas 42.
Council members have supported taking in the acreage to gain land for new housing, which is lacking in the city filled with poor-drainage areas, and to boost Kilgore’s profile via an interstate entrance.
The ordinance passed on a 3-2 vote with Mayor Pro Tem Harvey McClendon and Councilman Bobby Hale dissenting.
Both men said Wednesday they supported the annexation but not its timing. The council in the past 18 months has annexed three other areas and committed to extending utilities as demand arises for city water and sewer services.
“I want to see budget-wise what we’re talking about and how we time doing this for everybody,” Hale said. “I would like to see those (numbers), make sure we know what we’re doing and what we’re getting into.”
