Tyler, TX (KETK) — The London 2012 Olympic games begin tonight on KETK. The Olympics have always been about winning gold and winning for your country. Some older generation Americans worry that sense of patriotism for the games is slowly vanishing.
Madeleine Salli tells KETK for her family the Olympics brings them together. Salli says "I think it was so wonderful to get together as a family and watch and root for America.
Another Tyler resident talked to KETK about the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Richard Davis remembered watching the Olympic torch, the massive crowds and the the excitement. Davis also talked about watching Mary Lou Retton win the Gold for the U.S.A and the moment it happened. Davis said "we were rooting for the U.S.A all the way, U.S.A all the way."
The people who spoke to KETK say they've seen the enthusiasm for the Olympics change among the younger generation. Richard M. Smith said "it wasn't just an athletic competition it had to do with their country. " Madeleine Salli also echoed the same feeling. Salli said "I don't think people are excited about it now they're so involved with the technical thing they don't just enjoy."
