An East Texan serving in Afghanistan was killed in action Thursday.
37-year-old 1st Sgt. Russell R. Bell was a Paratrooper from Tyler.
Sgt. Bell joined the Army in 1996 as an Infantryman.
This was his fourth combat deployment to Afghanistan over the course of seven years.
He received several awards, including the Bronze Star Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, The Purple Heart and The Army Commendation Medal with Valor, to name a few.
Bell was killed by an IED.
