Longview, TX — The School Supply Train will pull into the station at 8 a.m. Friday, and members of the Junior League of Longview have been hard at work organizing the event.
Local children from low-income families can receive backpacks full of school supplies at the train. The Junior League — along with members of First Baptist Church and Buckner Children & Family Services — distributed 3,200 backpacks in 2011 and have the same number available this year, said organizer Stephanie Walden.
“We’ve also increased the number of school uniforms we have available,” Walden said. “With more and more public schools requiring uniforms, that’s a definite need that we’re trying to meet.”
While there are income requirements to receive the supplies, there are no geographical limits, she said. Children from about 15 local districts generally participate in the event.
