Upshur County — On Monday, at around 10:40 p.m., a deputy with the Upshur County Sheriff Office stopped a car on Hwy 155 S. Near FM 1002 for a traffic violation. When the deputy started to exit his car, the driver sped away on Hwy 155 N.
During the pursuit, the deputy saw the driver throw items out of the car.
Later in the chase, a Department of Public Safety trooper tried to stop the vehicle with a spike strip at the intersection of Hwy 155 and FM 2685. However, the driver continued on Hwy 155 N until the vehicle hit a pylon of the over pass under construction at Hwy 271 and Hwy 155 S.
Emergency crews took the person to a Gilmer hospital where the driver was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Precinct #3 Judge Rhonda Welch.
Agencies assisting in the investigation are Gilmer Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
