JACKSONVILLE — An attorney for Lon Morris College told the Jacksonville Daily Progress this week that the East Texas District Bankruptcy court decided to take their Title IV status away.
What that means is...because of their bankruptcy, they won't be able to offer financial aid to the students scheduled to go there...like Pell Grants and things like that that most students count on...otherwise, they'd have to pay those expensive schooling costs out of pocket.
Cera Walley is a sophomore in college...as of Wednesday, she's no longer a Lon Morris student. She's going to Jacksonville College.
"The only reason I went to Lon Morris is because I had a scholarship. But now I'm registering here today to go here," Walley said.
After news broke this week that Lon Morris couldn't offer financial aid, she called them to see what to do.
"He told me that he would have to get back with me Thursday morning...on if the grants are for sure or not...but I can't wait to go to school. I mean, I need to know," Walley said.
Most students just can't pay thousands of dollars out of pocket for their tuition.
"Financial aid, FAFSA, all that is a great help, but Lon Morris isn't offering that or, as of right now, isn't offering that so...I mean...I'm not going to Lon Morris," Walley said.
She wants to be a teacher...and hopes to eventually teach school in her hometown of Rusk...and she wants to take her junior college courses near home.
So she's glad Jacksonville College is there to help...but she has no ill will toward her old school.
"I don't know, I really don't want to talk bad about Lon Morris because I love the school, I love the teachers...the environment, but...they could have...gave us a heads up," Walley said.
The school also told the Progress they are still trying to work with the Department of Education to see if they can operate with Title IV.
KETK has tried to contact Lon Morris today to get a little more information on this...but they told us they are in the process of sending out a media release that should come out at some point today.
