TYLER — After more than 2 decades in the Christian music industry, TobyMac is reaching new audiences all the time...
Getting his start with the platinum selling Christian act DC Talk in the late 80s...Toby's name may not have been familiar as some mainstream artists...but that all changed last week, when his new album "Eye on It" debuted at #1 on iTunes.
Jennifer Winborn, music director for Christian radio station KVNE is a huge fan.
"He's just got this raw talent and heart that just screams through his music...and he's not overly preachy! He's more about love and once you get into his album, you find out about Jesus and how much he loves us, but he's not all up in your face," Winborn said.
And his appeal is multigenerational.
"I have to say that TobyMac is the only artist that my kids and I both mark the calendar for when his CD drops...because we both love him," Winborn said.
As you can tell, Toby's special blend of pop, rock and hip hop is on par with anything you'll hear on mainstream radio these days...
"He's singing about uplifting things and so...it's one of those things where you can listen to it and you're uplifted at the same time," said UT Tyler student Robert Maglott.
"His music is very positive...he talks a lot about his lifestyle...he's not ashamed to share the gospel in his lyrics," said UT Tyler student Keith Temple.
If you're concerned Toby will drop his message of faith as he sells more and more records...think again.
In one of his brand new songs he sings "It's never been my dream to see my face in magazines, it's always been about the music, hoping God would use it...to set some people free."
