Longview, TX — Improvements are coming to west Longview neighborhoods surrounding Birdie Park as part of the RENEW! Longview initiative: Resources Enriching Neighborhoods through Empowerment Works. From November 5 – 17, the City of Longview is partnering with Pine Tree ISD, Go West Longview, as well as other organizations and community volunteers to help make a difference in the area. The ultimate goal of RENEW! Longview is to improve the quality of life in neighborhoods by utilizing a variety of crime prevention, social, and environmental methods that includes support from several City of Longview departments, nonprofit organizations, volunteers, and neighborhood residents.
According to Police Area Representative Officer James Bray, “Working together with the residents, we believe we can help improve the neighborhood. We invite volunteers from the neighborhood or throughout Longview to come help.”
During the project, work will focus on the neighborhoods north of Highway 80, south of Broadway Drive, east of Lane Wells Drive, and west of Scenic Drive. City crews have already begun cleaning streets and drainage ways. Sanitation crews will be picking up heavy limbs and bulky trash. Streets will be swept and weeds growing along the road will be mowed. Street signs will be upgraded or repaired. Environmental Health will be working with residents to address junk vehicles, stray animals, or other concerns. The Police Department will bring in officers on foot and bicycle patrol. The fire department will offer home safety inspections to help identify dangers and prevent damage.
On October 25, police officers and other city representatives will be in the neighborhood talking with residents and identifying problems that need to be addressed.
Volunteer cleanup days will occur on Saturday, November 10, and Saturday, November 17. Volunteers will be in the area assisting residents with various problems. Dumpsters will be in place in the vicinity. Bulk items can be placed at the curb for bulky item pickup.
On Saturday, November 17, from Noon – 3:00 p.m., a neighborhood block party will be held at Birdie Park to celebrate the accomplishments achieved during the RENEW! Longview project.
Neighborhood residents are encouraged to contact the Longview Police Department at 903-237-1199 or contact Police Area Representative James Bray at 903-399-4724.
