A new coalition in Tyler is aimed at raising the bar for the city's school district.
Representing the new coalition at the news conference will be Dr. Nile Smith, Cedrick Granberry, Ms. Sheryl Chester, JoAnn Fleming, and Rick Eisenbach
According to the latest reports from the Texas Comptroller’s Office, Tyler ISD is spending high levels of money per student with mediocre academic results when compared to other school districts. http://www.fastexas.org/
The “No More Excuses, Tyler ISD! Coalition” will address these poor academic results, growing discipline issues on many campuses, and the lack of respect and support for teachers.
Coalition members agree: The evidence is clear that merely passing school bonds to build new schools does not deliver high academic results for all students in Tyler ISD. Passing bonds to build new schools does not build character, nor does it build strong educational or moral foundations for all children. Tyler ISD is not producing consistent academic results that assure us students are getting what they need to master a skill or a trade, or to earn a degree at any college. Too many of our students must take remedial courses before ever taking the first college class. Too many students cannot read at grade level or above. Both of our high schools are rated ‘Academically Unacceptable.’ Dangerous discipline issues plague many of the schools, while the students who desire to learn and the teachers who desire to teach suffer. This is unacceptable to us. We are tired of hearing excuses and are ready to work with the Tyler ISD Board and Administration to tackle these issues and solve the problems.
