Texas — Our news partners at The Houston Chronicle report; details are emerging about a prayer group led by a Texas man in Kansas City, Mo., after his wife, 27-year-old Bethany Deaton, was found dead earlier this month in what authorities described as a staged suicide near a lake.
Tyler Deaton met Bethany while the two were students at Southwestern University, a pastoral campus in Georgetown. The charismatic leader of an unsanctioned prayer group, Deaton then moved his followers to Kansas City, where they joined the International House of Prayer, or IHOP. One of Deaton’s followers, 23-year-old Micah Moore, told investigators Bethany was murdered because the group feared she was about to reveal the prayer group’s secrets, which included sexually assaulting her while she was drugged and male members having sex with Deaton as part of a “religious experience.”
