Tyler, Texas — For the past thirty years, Meals on Wheels has delivered warm Thanksgiving dinners to elderly and disabled people here in East Texas.
This year nearly 100 people requested to get a thanksgiving dinner from meals on wheels. Director, Mike Powell, told KETK, "My favorite part is that i get to see the volunteers coming in and they recognize what a difference their making in these people's lives." When most people remember Thanksgiving they think family friends and lots of food, but unfortunately that's not always the case which is why meals on wheels makes it their priority to bring everyone in need a warm thanksgiving dinner."
Many people on the delivery route spend every day alone, including holidays. One volunteer, David Fiveash, said, "You're probably the only person their going to see that day with a warm meal and a smile on your face." The meals include, roasted turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings, including dessert! "Just something to do to make a difference on thanksgiving day," said Powell.
One East Texan receiving the meal said, "Y'all just don't know how good this is, having a meal everyday and just being alive." Mary Brewer isn't the only one who appreciates this ministry. Others said, "Means so much to me, happy and so appreciative."
