The NFL could eliminate kickoffs in the name of safety.
Commissioner Roger Goodell has discussed just that with the head of the league's competition committee.
The team that wins the toss would start on defense.
The former "kicking" team would have the ball in a 4th and 15 situation on its own 30 yard line.
The "kicking" team could then go for the first down, or punt.
And if they do not get the first down, then the former "receiving" team would get the ball with good field position.
The idea came from Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano who coached at Rutgers in 2010 when Eric Legrand was paralyzed during a kick off play.
