Simpson says as speaker, he would put rules ahead of party

Longview — State Rep. David Simpson, the tea party-backed lawmaker who will represent Gregg and Upshur counties in the Texas House next year, made it official Monday.

The Longview Republican said encouragement from his fellow representatives and prayer had led him to challenge House Speaker Joe Straus for one of the three most powerful offices in the state.
