A man and woman escaped early today when fire swept through an aging wood-framed house in rural Gregg County.
Clarksville City-Warren City Volunteer Fire Chief Derek Zivney said the couple escaped with a dog out the back of the house. He said the man awoke at about 6 a.m. to see the glow of fire coming from the garage area of the residence in the 4000 block of North Point Pleasant Road northeast of Gladewater.
When firefighters arrived, about half of the house and roof were on fire, Zivney said.
Zivney said the department called for assistance from Gladewater and White Oak fire departments – who provided manpower and tanker trucks. The chief said 90 percent of the house was destroyed along with two vehicles.
“They were very fortunate to get out,” Zivney said. “The fire spread very quickly through the older wood-frame structure, from the garage to the living area.”
