Flint, Texas — Ever since the November elections, some Smith County business owners have rushed to get their alcohol permits. Now, the beer is here. Some stores in Flint have their shelves stocked, and they are selling beer and wine just in time for Christmas.
The owner here at Craft Corner in Flint said, December is normally one of their slowest months of the year, since people aren't heading out to the lake, however they expect that to change with alcohol sales. "Our permit was issued about 2:45 in the afternoon yesterday and the vendors started calling and asking if we were ready for a shipment," said Carla Bacica, the co-owner.
Vendors say they have been non-stop since last night stocking the shelves in Flint. One East Texan, Jeff Shirey, said, "I'm from Whitehouse, I was against it for a while, but for them to grow they're going to have to have that." Bacica said they weren't expecting to get their permit so soon. She said, "A man came up and said I want to buy this and she said its not in the scanner yet, so I stopped and put it in, so its been kind of crazy." She said they plan to have a separate building outside of their convenient store, just for beer and wine. "That way a family that doesn't drink can come in and get their cokes, snacks, slushies."
The Brookshire Grocery Company released a statement saying: "Consumers expressed their opinions with the November election, and the Brookshire Grocery Company began working through the appropriate procedures once Proposition 2 passed and the results were certified." They are currently awaiting the approval from TABC for their stores in Tyler.
Another East Texan, Craig Myers said, "Well I mean taxes themselves, it's going to help the roads and everything else." Other people we spoke to said they weren't expecting to see alcohol in stores before the first of the year, but, "This is awesome!" Both the owners of Craft Corner and Brookshire's in Flint say they expect to get their wine shipments in tomorrow morning.
