Lufkin , Tx — Angelina County Judge Wes Suiter said Wednesday that the comp time issue affecting the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office should have come as no surprise to new Sheriff Greg Sanches.
When Sanches took office Jan. 1, he terminated six employees — one chief deputy, two jail captains, one sheriff’s office captain and two deputies — who were still owed comp time. Per county policy, until that comp time is paid out, those positions cannot be filled. In order to qualify for unemployment pay, the six had to wait until Jan. 1 so Sanches would have the authority to fire them. Had they resigned before Jan. 1, after being told Sanches would not be extending employment to them upon taking office, they would not have been eligible for unemployment benefits, Suiter said.
