THE TEXAS TRIBUNE — Texas finished 2012 with an unemployment rate of 6.1 percent - a drop of 1 point since the end of 2011, and 1.3 percentage points under the national rate - continuing its gradual improvement from its 8.2 percent unemployment rate at the end of 2010.
But that is still a long way away from the 4.6 percent unemployment rate Texas enjoyed at the beginning of 2000.
Since then, the state has weathered two separate unemployment spikes - in the middle of 2003, when it topped out at 6.9 percent, and at the end of 2010.
After the Texas Workforce Commission last week announced another drop in the Texas unemployment rate, we searched for the data behind the findings and found unemployment numbers for every county, for each month, all the way back to 2000.
