Tyler TX (KETK) — The anticipation to graduate high school and open the next chapter of life weighs heavy on many high school seniors' minds.
Seniors are starting or finishing up college or job applications. Some though want to go to college but simply cant afford it.
Thankfully there are many scholarships available for students here in East Texas.
"We do as much as we can to get those applications in their hand and make them aware of it. We give them every opportunity they can to win some money," said College and Career Advisor Laura Hunter.
Hunter tells KETK 80% of Bullard High School seniors plan on going to college
Fortunately, there are over 100 scholarships those students can apply for.
"The money is out there. There are communities and foundations that are eager to help our kids and all it takes is just pursuing that," said Hunter.
Senior Chandler Clark is applying for two different scholarships to help lift the financial burden off of his single mom.
Clark tells KETK any little bit of money helps offset the cost.
"You know anything to help her out is what I'm going to try to do so its not coming out of her pocket. It will just make the stress level go down a lot," said Senior Chandler Clark.
Businesses and organizations all across East Texas are offering money for graduating seniors and college students.
Cherokee County Electric Cooperative is offering 25 students a $1000 scholarship. The scholarship is available for Cherokee County Electric Cooperative customers.
The electric company has been giving away this scholarship since 2003.
The company is happy they can help offset some of the costs for kids aspiring to achieve a higher education.
"It's not uncommon to get thank you notes back or the students get in touch with us after their enrolled to let us know how they're doing or how the money is helping them," said Administrative Assistant Nan Glaze.
