Tyler, TX — Downtown Tyler is known for its Arts & Entertainment, beautiful architecture, buildings, restaurants, shopping and a theater.
Many people say there's a building that doesn't fit which is the property of the former Tyler Theater on Broadway.
The historical Tyler Theater was built and opened in 1940. It was closed in 1982, since then there has been several owners.
"It definitely leaves it's so not pretty mark on the square, I think it would look a lot better if was restored," says Collin Gillespie, Tyler resident.
Many people say, it's sad to a historic building in this condition.
"Historically it was this really wonderful place and I remember thinking...man hopefully that can restore that or do something whether it's a theater or not," says Pike Wisner, Tyler resident.
The Tyler theater has hosted many movie premieres and has welcomed many movie stars.
Many want to know what's the plan?
Why does this famous building look like this, KETK spoke to the city of Tyler and the new owner of the property Rick Eltife.
He's the owner of 'Rick's on the Square' and active member of the Heart of Tyler.
He tells KETK he gained full ownership a little over a year ago.
He says, as a property owner there are restrictions and high costs.
The City of Tyler released a statement to KETK on this issue, stating there has been communication with the property owner about the condition of the property.
Assistant City Manager tells KETK, Rick Eltife has shared his vision and will be working on restoration of the building.
Eltife tells KETK, his vision is to restore the property with digital signage with neon lights like it used to be.
