Tyler TX (KETK) — Millions of Americans are finding errors on their credit reports.
According to a Federal Trade Commission study, 40 million Americans have mistakes and those mistake are costing them money.
An error on your credit report can keep you from getting a mortgage, a job or even a car.
Financial Advisor Jay Oliver says people need to check their credit reports more than once a year.
Oliver says people need to go over their credit reports in more detail to make sure they are eligible.
Also, make sure personal information and credit history is accurate.
"If something was reported an error, it certainly can impact your ability to get credit. You want to make sure not only to look for the small details, but make sure all the credit that you've had in the past is reported accurately," said Oliver.
Oliver says most people do not look over their credit reports until it is time to apply for credit .
