Tyler, Tx — On March 2,1836 Texas adopted it's own Declaration of Independence. This declaration officially separated Texas from Mexico and helped make Texas into the great state that it is today.
KETK spoke with John Ross, Professor of social sciences at Tyler Junior College, and he told us how this declaration has been so monumental in shaping our state, saying, "Texans acquired a certain degree of nationalism which has never gone away..It's left Texans with an unusual degree of identification of their state more than you find in any other state in America."
But this declaration did not come easy. In fact, Professor Ross tells KETK Texas started questioning their place in the Republic of Mexico in 1836, but were not successfully independent from the republic until ten years later.
Today marks the 177th anniversary since this declaration has been put into place.
