Tyler, TX — Local Catholics were excited to find out who the new Pope was this afternoon.
KETK visited a Catholic Church in Tyler shortly after the name of the new pope was released.
They say, it's a joyous day for the Catholic Church and for people of all faith.
The new pope is 76 year old, Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina.
He will be called Pope Francis, the 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.
Bishop Joseph Strickland of the Diocese of Tyler and Father Anthony McLaughlin of the Immaculate Conception tell KETK, it's a great surprise.
"He's the first Pope from Latin America, he's the first Jesuit Pope, first
Argentinean Pope, and he's the first pope to take the name Francis," says Father Anthony McLaughlin of the Immaculate Conception.
"The pope that has been chosen so quickly relatively quickly in the conclave I guess this was the third or fourth vote really the second day of voting in the conclave so that is a good sign of the unity of the cardinals," says Bishop Joseph Strickland of the Diocese of Tyler.
