Elkart, TX (KETK) — A 50-year-old man died Saturday while in custody of the Anderson County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities in Elkhart got a suspicious call from a local store just before 3:00 a.m. on Saturday. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Jeffery Mallachi Eastman, 50, who appeared to be intoxicated.
An officer took Eastman to jail for public intoxication after he refused treatment from an ambulance, according to the sheriff's department.
A few hours later, Eastman was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead at around 7:00 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Wesley.
Law enfocement is waiting for the autopsy and toxicology results, stating that Eastman did have a history of drug abuse, but they cannot be certain that was the cause of his death.
The sheriff's office and Texas Rangers will continue to investigate this matter.
