How about parents saying "NO!" My 4 year old walks through the store and says "Oooh, SpongeBob" which is followed by myself or my wife saying, "yes, that's SpongeBob. Say goodbye to SpongeBob. Maybe we'll see him later." And that is the end of it. We have taught our child to say hello and goodbye to characters in the stores. And he understands the word "NO." It's that easy. If you can't say no to your child, you need to step up and be a parent.
