Has any sort of legislated prohibition ever accomplished its purpose? It would be interesting to see that history. Certainly prohibitions have produced some surprising--and undesirable--side effects. For instance the Volstead Act prohibiting alcohol consumption in the 1930s not only resulted in the persecution and incarceration of countless citizens for producing liquor, but also it gave rise to Al Capone and organized crime. People will get what they want, either within or outside the law, and teenagers always covet the contents of a locked liquor cabinet. The desire to protect our children is logical but is prohibition the way to accomplish this?
