Texas court has upheld the death sentence for an Amarillo man
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has upheld the death sentence of a man convicted more than two decades ago of robbing and stabbing an Amarillo man who agreed to give him and a companion a ride to the Salvation Army.
Brent Ray Brewer was condemned in 1991, a year after 66-year-old Robert Laminack was stabbed and robbed of $140. A federal court overturned Brewer's death sentence and a new punishment trial was
held in 2009.
Attorneys for the 41-year-old former farm hand contended his trial court lacked jurisdiction in the case, questioned parole eligibility information both given and not given to jurors, argued the judge improperly denied a challenge to a prospective juror and improperly allowed expert testimony regarding Brewer's future dangerousness.
The appeals court Wednesday denied all arguments.
