Area shoppers crowded supermarkets Friday, eager to get ahead of the last-minute rush to buy Thanksgiving staples — mindful that that indispensable can of cream of mushroom soup just might be sold out should they procrastinate too long.

For those who haven’t already bought the makings for Thanksgiving, a suggestion: Get ready to wade through crowded aisles and wait in line to check out.

“Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be busy,” said Gary Huddleston, Kroger’s director of consumer affairs.

Shopping for the makings of a classic Thanksgiving meal is as much a part of the tradition as the gathering itself — just ask any of the shoppers Friday who wheeled carts, brimming over with goods, from the store to their vehicles in the parking lot.

LaDonna Saccoccio, with the help of a Kroger’s employee, rolled two buggies full of groceries to her car Friday afternoon. She bought enough to prepare a feast for 15 people.
