TYLER — It's the second year for the Susan G. Komen "Ride for the Cure" here in East Texas. Event chair, Louise Hagen tells KETK, last year they raised $20,000 and hope to raise at least that this year.
"Basically what we do is...riders can register to ride and when they do that, they also agree to raise at least $200 for a donation and they do that by just e-mailing their friends and family," Hagen said.
And of course...it's for a good cause.
"About 75% of it goes to pay for mammograms for women in East Texas that cant afford them. So it pays for those life saving tests," she said.
The main difference between Race for the Cure and Ride for the Cure is...here, you're on a horse!
It's a trail ride on the beautiful 5,000 acre Tarrant Ranch on County Road 3704 in Bullard.
There were a couple of different rides...a 3 1/2 hour advanced ride that includes some creek crossing...and a shorter 1 1/2 hour ride without the water part.
Events like this are impossible without the help of dedicated volunteers...Thomas Cannon has been a Veterinarian for more than 3 decades.
He gave up his Saturday to be on standby in case a horse gets hurt.
"We also have a daughter that has had breast cancer. She lives in Colorado and so...breast cancer has hit a lot of families and everybody knows someone or has had someone in their family that's had it," Hagen said.
