Judge allows Texas cheerleaders to hold religious signs

Judge allows Texas cheerleaders to hold religious signs
News

POSTED: Friday, October 5, 2012 - 4:36pm

UPDATED: Monday, October 8, 2012 - 6:38pm

After a recent controversy, some tough cheerleaders won a small victory in court.

A Texas judge extended a temporary restraining order allowing them to display religious signs at football games.

Under the Friday night lights they sport black and red uniforms, .but Thursday, Kountze cheerleaders were dressed for business. After being in court for more than six hours, their signs of support for Kountze football players will continue for now.

Tom Brandt, representing Kountze ISD, questioned the sponsor about the cheer constitution which deems her a district employee who instructs the girls. But the sponsor and the girls testified saying they loosely follow that cheer constitution allowing the cheerleaders instead to make the decisions.

Superintendent Weldon's testimony may have been a game changer in the girls fight. He admitted that they discriminated against the childrens' religious expression, and he admitted that they censored their speech.

Superintendent Weldon told CNN he respects the cheerleaders and admitted in court that he received bad legal advice when the controversy began in September.

Weldon said, "I commend them for their boldness, for their convictions, but as a school district we're gonna continue to follow the law."

While not technically a win, Thursday's temporary restraining order extension is being considered a step in the right direction for the cheerleaders.

The cheerleaders will return to court on October 18th. That's when both attorneys will present their findings.
