Mike Owens, former Tyler Lee coach, put together a Hall of Fame career at a school he almost left
Tyler — Mike Owens is a hall of Famer, the winningest coach in Tyler Lee history.
But Owens told KETK Sports Director Danny Elzner that he almost left Lee soon after he got there.
"When it was announced in Port Arthur that I was leaving to go to Tyler Lee, I had 15 or 20 phone calls from friends of mine," Owens said. "A few of them said that my career will end at Tyler Lee."
But Owens proved them wrong.
He led Lee to the playoffs 13 times in 15 years.
Owens led the Robert E. Lee Red Raiders to the 2004 state championship.
But it all almost didn't happen.
"To tell you the truth I was looking around at some other places after about the first six months," Owens said. "But I had a great coaching staff."
"We knew we had stuck our plow in hard ground when we came here," Owens added. "The kids jumped right on board because they were hungry to win and be very successful."
"With the help of the community, the players and their parents, we were able to turn the thing around and have a pretty good run there for a while," Owens said.
Pretty good indeed.
