There's something new in the oldest town in Texas.
SFA has a new offense.
It's an almost all-pass offense.
Call it the Nac no-huddle.
Stephen F. Austin State University has gone to a spread offense.
It's a speeded-up spread.
SFA wants to throw every twenty seconds.
"It's a fast-paced tempo," said coach J. C. Harper. "We felt like we had the players to do that."
"It looks like it's going to work," Harper added. "We're going to have a lot of fun."
Harper is still looking for his first win. His first season in Lumberjack Land was a winless season.
This season, SFA will play 12 games for the first time ever. One of those games will be against TCU in Fort Worth.
"We're going to play one BCS school every year," said SFA Athletic Director Robert Hill. "That's something our players like to do."
"Our fans like it," Hill added. "It gives us an opportunity against some of the top schools in the country.
"The pay day is not bad either," Hill said. "It will help our program."
Tyrone Ross led Tyler Lee to the state championship four years ago. Now, he's leading an East Texas migration to SFA.
Nineteen area athletes have signed with Stephen F. Austin.
Ramonte Hampton ran for 1,600 yards for John Tyler. He'll play for the Lumberjacks.
Gralyn Crawford led Palestine Westwood to its best season ever. He's also headed to SFA.
Stephen F.Austin used to get most of its players from the Houston area. But now, the 'Jacks want to come back with East Texans.
"I consider ourselves to be the university of East Texas," coach Harper concluded.
