Former LSU football legend Billy Cannon suffered a stroke Tuesday while working at the Louisiana State Penitentiary.

"We have been in touch with the family and they report that he is alert and resting," reads a statement issued to NBC33 News. "He did have a stroke and the doctors will conduct tests to see the extent. They will keep him in ICU tonight and watch him overnight. The family thanks everyone for their prayers and concerns."

Cathy Fontenot, Assistant Warden for the Louisiana State Penitentiary, tells NBC33 News that Cannon left the prison just after 12:30 p.m. by ambulance. He has worked as a dentist for Angola for the past 15 years.

Billy Cannon is an All-American, 1959 Heisman Trophy winner and 2008 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame. He is one of the American Football League’s most celebrated players.
