REPORT: NCAA drops 10-second slowdown rule

UPDATED: Wednesday, March 5, 2014 - 6:24pm

Multiple media outlets are reporting the 10-second slowdown rule proposed by the NCAA  has been dropped.

The proposal caught many off guard within the college football community, including head coaches of many fast-paced offenses from South Carolina's Steve Spurrier to Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy.

USA Today filed a report stating the 12-member committee voted unanimously not to send the proposal forward to the Playing Rules Oversight Panel.

The rule would have forced offenses to wait 10 seconds before snapping the ball or be flagged for delay of game.

"The committee's decision came the day before the NCAA's 11-member playing rules oversight panel was scheduled to vote on whether to make the proposal a rule for the upcoming season," according to ESPN.

It's possible the proposal could come back in play year's later after more data is obtained on whether the pace of the game puts student-athletes at greater risk.
