Adam Scott has won the 77th Masters golf tournament, beating Argentine Angel Cabrera on the second hole of a thrilling sudden-death playoff to become the first Australian ever to win the Masters.
Each man had sunk a remarkable birdie on the 72nd hole at Augusta National Golf Club to finish the regulation portion of the tournament at nine-under-par 279 and send the tournament to extra holes.

With a lengthy, tie-breaking putt on the final hole of the fourth round, Scott pulled ahead. But Cabrera followed with an approach shot to within a few feet of the hole, then dropped his putt.

Scott, 32, long considered one of the best golfers to have never won a major golf championship, and five other countrymen previously had placed second at the Masters. He tied for runner-up in the 2011 tourney with countryman Jason Day, who placed third Sunday, two strokes back.

Cabrera, 43, won the Masters' coveted green jacket in 2009.
The pre-tournament favorite, American Tiger Woods, tied for fourth, at five under par, four strokes behind the leaders.
