Spring Hill High School in Longview has announced their choice for the new head girl's basketball coach and he's known pretty well around the East Texas coaching circuit.

Allan Pope will be named the new coach, according to athletic director, Mark Sartain.

"We are very fortunate and extremely excited to be able to land a coach with Allan's resume, experience and knowledge of the program, the kids and the community," said Sartain. "I hope it's exciting for him, too. Anytime you have a guy with 20 years of successful experience, that person stands out among other candidates pretty easily."

Pope, a native of El Campo, Texas and a University of Texas at Tyler alum, has a coaching career dating back to 1993.

Pope has coached at a number of East Texas schools including; Bishop T.K. Gorman, Henderson, Van Alstyne, Pine Tree, Lindale, Jacksonville and Brownsboro.

Pope's holds a career coaching record of 300-154 and a girl's basketball record of 290-140.

"I had a great experience while living and coaching in Longview during my years at Pine Tree," said Pope. "My daughter, Erin, still lives here and I feel like Longview is home to me. So I am very familiar with the area and have many friends working at Spring Hill as well as many old friends living here. Also, during my years in East Texas, Spring Hill girls basketball was always a great rival and I had great respect for how they played and competed. I know it is a great school with great kids who love to compete at a high level."

Pope also took Pine Tree and Jacksonville to their first regional tournaments and has won six district championships in his career.

"I love the game and coach it with a passion and I hope to combine that with the girl's same love and passion to be as successful as possible," Pope added.

Pope also has been named the Longview News-Journal Coach of the Year twice in 2002 and 2004, and was also a finalist for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches State 4A Coach of the Year in 2011.
