World Cup: Costa Rica defeats Greece 5-4 on penalties
Atlanta, Ga (CNN) — Costa Rica will play in the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time in its history after defeating Greece in Recife.
Los Ticos triumphed 5-3 on penalties following a tense shootout, having played for almost an hour with 10 men after being held to 1-1 following extra time.
Michael Umana scored the winning kick, firing high into the net to spark wild celebrations after Keylor Navas had saved from Theofanis Gekas.
Costa Rica will now travel to Salvador to face the Netherlands in the last eight.
Bryan Ruiz, the team captain, had given Costa Rica the advantage with a fine effort after a goalless first half.
But his side was reduced to 10 men after 66 minutes when Oscar Duarte was shown a second yellow card.
And Greece took full advantage with Sokratis Papastathopoulos netting a dramatic late equalizer to take the game into extra time.
But with no goals in the additional 30 minutes, it was left to penalties to decide the tie.
And when Navas saved from substitute forward Theofanis Gekas, Umana stepped up to make history for his side.
