San Augustine Getting Aid

Tools

By Joe LePage - KETK News

SAN AUGUSTINE - Skies in San Augustine are clear,
but it was a very different scene this past weekend. Flash floods left area roads impassable, and it washed residents out of their houses.

"The water came so fast without warning," says Flood Victim Lonnie Dean. "When we looked up the water was just comin' in the house...all we could do was pick up and get out."

Now Lonnie Dean, and rest of the residents on Water and Bank are assessing the damage. Almost everything, including couches, and TV's will have to be tossed. They're too water-logged to serve any purpose.

"All of my furniture, all of my clothing...linens..stuff like that - it's all gone," James Woods said as he sat on one of the few pieces of furniture he has left.

The Southern Baptists of Texas Convention are ripping up the floors at his house, some parts of his walls too.

Larry Shine, with SBTC told us what happens next: "Then we'll decontaminate the house so the owner can put in some fresh materials and fresh insulation and paneling and he can move back into his house....so what we're doing is helping him save his house."

There's a calming after this storm though, the agencies that have descended on this ravaged area.

Pallets of food and bottled water are being brought in by the East Texas Food Bank and American Red Cross.

Assembly lines get much needed materials to their destinations quicker.

Red Cross Branch Manager Glenna Harkness says bottled water is the number one need.

"They have water," she says. "It's just not drinkable. It has to be boiled right now."

Residents here are hope things get back to normal as quickly as possible, and with the help of fellow Texans, hopefully that will happen.

To donate, contact either the East Texas Food Bank, or American Red Cross.
