JACKSONVILLE--A new arrest brings new information to the surface regarding the House of Israel, the controversial group in Jacksonville.
According to authorities, the House of Israel is a religious group that doesn't recognize U.S. Law. In April, Stephen Jackson, a federal fugitive on the run from Missouri, was arrested in connection with the House of Israel. House of Israel member, David Baugh, was also arrested for failure to identify, at the time of Jackson's arrest. Baugh was released from custody in April.
Thursday evening, Jacksonville police received an arrest warrant issued out of Missouri. Officials say the warrant was issued because Baugh was escaping parole and was not to leave Missouri. Also, Officials say they were told Baugh is considered armed and dangerous.
Since Baugh's first arrest, KETK has tried to contact the House of Israel for a comment. However, our calls have not been returned. Instead, KETK has received stacks of letters from House of Israel leaders, including some written by Baugh.
In one letter addressed to our reporter, Baugh writes, "The House of Israel is a christian ministry dedicated to humanitarian service." Another letter reads, "the House of Israel is not an offshoot of the Republic of Texas."
However, Friday's arrest may prove otherwise. Baugh did not answer the door when police first attempted to make the arrest. Officials say Baugh peeked through the window. Officials then got a search warrant and entered the House of Israel by force. Officials found a large quantity of controlled substance.
"There would have been thousands of pills...some of them packaged in what appeared to me for distribution, in packages of 10 and 20," says Jacksonville Chief of Police, Reece Daniel.
Officials say the six different types of prescription drugs, such as Lorazepam and Cephalexin, were in illegal possession. In addition, police confiscated more than eight-thousand pills, packaged with labeling that included the House of Israel's address alongside The Republic of Texas.
"If those are labeled as such, inside the House of Israel, I don't see how they can deny any connection, do you?" says Chief Daniel.
Chief Daniel says he believes the group is not only a spin off of the Republic of Texas but also, but also a group that may be more dangerous than police first thought.
"These are the same type of people as Timothy McVeigh and Randy Weaver. Anyone that watches the news knows those two names. (The House of Israel) may appear to be clowns with their beliefs, but you better take them seriously," says Chief Daniel.
Baugh is currently in the Cherokee County jail waiting to be taken back to Missouri.
