Nacogdoches Police continue their investigation into a shooting incident on South Ritchie Street Thursday afternoon.

The investigation has indicated that two men went to the Ritchie Street residence and purchased a quantity of marijuana. The two men returned to the residence a short time later, and claimed a discrepancy in the amount of marijuana. Once inside the residence, one of the men produced a .22 caliber pistol and threatened the resident, tied him up and the men then began to ransack the house, gathering valuables in a robbery.

The resident of the home, Davarick Chatman, age 32, was able to free himself and retrieve a 16 gauge shotgun. Chatman then shot one of the men, identified as Michael Obrien Johnson, age 27 of Lufkin. Johnson was shot several times at close range. Johnson died at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.

The other man, identified as Courtny Randale Allen, age 24 also of Lufkin, fled the scene on foot. He turned himself in to the Nacogdoches Police Department last night on a warrant for Aggravated Robbery.

Officers recovered over five ounces of suspected marijuana from the scene. Chatman was arrested and charged with Felony Possession of Marijuana. Officers recovered both the shotgun and the pistol at the scene.

“The evidence indicates that the incident was a drug transaction that turned into an armed robbery, that resulted in the shooting death of one of the individuals involved”, said NPD Sgt. Greg Sowell. “The shooting case will be presented to the Grand Jury for review”, he added.

Man reportedly shoots and kills attacker, one suspect at-large

One man is dead and another remained at-large Thursday evening after police say the two possibly broke into a man's home.

After a 4:30 p.m. disturbance was called in to the Nacogdoches Police Department, officers arrived in the 400 block of South Ritchie Street and found a man in the street still holding a gun, Nacogdoches Police Lt. Dan Taravella said.

Officers determined that man was the homeowner, who said two men approached him, a disturbance followed, and there was a possible home invasion, Taravella said.

At the scene, it was determined the homeowner had shot one of the men in the front yard, but the second man ran away.

The man who was shot was pronounced dead at a local Hospital.
