Says issue would be moot if federal government would provide border security
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn is backing off his earlier support of Congress reviewing birthright citizenship.
The Texas Republican said Friday that taking another look at the 14th Amendment amid the national debate over immigration "is going after a symptom rather than the cause in the first place."
Cornyn previously backed calls for a review. He now says the issue would be moot if the federal government would provide stronger border security.
Cornyn spoke at a port of entry in Hidalgo along the U.S.-Mexico border.
He appeared with the Texas Border Coalition, which opposes calls to deny citizenship to children of illegal immigrants born in the U.S.
