Winter is nearly upon us in East Texas and the weather can change at a moment's notice. Since 2010, we have had five winter weather events for East Texas with the most significant being in February 2010, when the town of Lindale measured 10 inches of snow.

Most people remember the most recent severe weather and winter weather that moved through during December 25, 2012. Besides that day, this past winter was very quiet. The reason for that was a ridge of high pressure dominating much of the United States and the cold weather was focused more into Canada and the New England states.

With the recent arctic blast of cold air that moved through East Texas earlier this week, this has set up a potential pattern of us seeing below normal temperatures for the remainder of the month of November. With this trend, there is a possibility of us seeing cooler than normal temperatures for the winter months.

The setup is cold water temperatures in the Northern Pacific Ocean and in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. With cold waters, an upper level area of high pressure will form and allow the cold air from Canada to dip well into the Northern Plains and into the Northeast. A north to south upper air pattern for the United States will send the Arctic Canadian air into parts of the Ohio Valley and Eastern Seaboard states. For them, the potential for snowfall is good. What that means for East Texas, is cooler than normal temperatures.

This pattern could change. If it shifts to the West, cooler weather will move into the region and could provide much colder temperatures. But, if the shift is to the East, we could contend with a warmer and drier air.

Regardless, for Tyler, we average about 1 inch of snow each season, so we wait to see what will be in store for us.
