Well, East Texas, the best weather team in the area just got better as we welcome back a familiar KETK face, meteorologist Dr. Robert Thornton.

A graduate from Mississippi State University with a Doctorate in Earth and Atmospheric Science (emphasis in Climatology), Dr. Robert Thornton has worked for the State Climatologist of Mississippi and taught at the university level. Before returning to graduate school, Dr. Thornton spent 13 years working as a broadcast meteorologist in Mississippi and Texas and worked as a freelance consultant. He also served as a post-doctoral researcher for Mississippi State University and the Agricultural Research Service.

In addition, Dr. Thornton has served as a National Science Fellow and taught science at an area middle school. His doctoral research involved climate and its effects on irrigation in the Mississippi Delta. Specifically, his research illustrated how surface water in reservoirs can be used as an alternative to groundwater for irrigation. Dr. Thornton is also a member of the KETK-TV "Hall of Fame," and righfully so.

His research & consulting areas include:

  • Radar estimates vs. actual measurements

  • Radar data interpretation

  • Weather data collection

  • Weather forecasting

  • Groundwater conservation for irrigation/farming through precipitation capture

  • Forensic meteorology & data interpretation

  • Severe weather preparedness

  • Land surface-atmosphere effects on precipitation

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Educational background:

  • 2012 - Ph.D., Earth and Atmospheric Sciences/Climatology - Mississippi State University

  • 1996 - M.S., Geosciences/Broadcast Meteorology - Mississippi State University

  • 1993 - B.S., Agricultural Journalism - Texas A&M University

KETK is so glad to welcome back Dr. Thornton, who will begin Thursday, January 9, on KETK Today, FOX51 Today and East Texas Live.

"Katie is a hard act to follow," said Dr. Thornton. "Even though I had been here 11 years, she stepped in and developed a huge following, so it's some big shoes to fill. Many will remember me, but I trust the folks of East Texas will watch and we'll work on that next award from BSCENE."

Like we said, the BEST just got BETTER!

What happened to Katie Vossler?

Welcome Home Robert, What a wonderful surprise to see you this morning. We have missed you. Hoping that Amanda and your child (children) are well. I am still at Noonday United Methodist. We would love to see you there anytime. Let me know if I may be of help to either of you as Tyler has grown just a bit. God Bless You.

Robert, welcome back to KETK and to your old stompin' grounds in East Texas! Knowing you personally, and after reviewing your accomplishments in broadcasting and in climatology, I am especially proud of the Christian influence you bring to your field of expertise and sphere of influence. I am honored to call you my friend and my brother in Christ!

And he's an Aggie, which makes his return a big plus for East Texas. Now, if you guys would talk to the cable system in Palestine about giving us back our KETK, we'd appreciate it. I miss you guys, especially Neal's P.O.V.

Welcome back. Kindly take a peak at Barton's recent POVs regarding climate change, etc. Maybe you can provide some needed insight to news people & the public. Barton has lost credibility due to his uninformed- as well as poorly written- POVs. Don't mean to throw a hot potato at you coming in the door... just that it borders on the inane. I could be missing the point- maybe that's the basis of his POVs... stir up controversy. Beating that same old drum gets old quickly. Thanks for any help.
