(KETK) - Tyler Tx — Hello East Texas. I hope you’ve had a good week so far. We’ve had very cold nights the past few nights. We'll stay above freezing ahead of our next cold front, which will then bring cooler temperatures again.
Let’s talk about the next few days…
Wednesday afternoon, we had a weak cold front move through East Texas. All we saw from it Wednesday was some high cloudiness that filtered the sunshine.
For Thursday, temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Wednesday thanks to northeast winds that will be with us most of the day. I expect most areas to be in the middle to upper 40s with Deep East Texas seeing the lower 50s.
As we move into Thursday night, winds will make a shift to the South. When we get those winds to shift to the south, it opens the gates of the Gulf of Mexico and Pacific Ocean moisture to return into our area. We will see that beginning Thursday evening and that should allow overnight lows to remain above freezing in many areas that night.
Friday Morning – Midday Friday
This time period looks to be cloudy with scattered showers beginning to move into East Texas. Below is the GFS and NAM forecast models at 6AM Friday morning and the NAM at 9AM. Notice at 6AM that the models have no activity in our area but the NAM at 9AM does have some rain to the northwest of Tyler mainly in between I-20 and I-30.
Remember, the forecast models are guidance to meteorologists and do not necessarily mean that it will rain at your location at the given time.
By around lunchtime is the time when I believe we will see rain begin in the Tyler and Longview area.
Friday afternoon looks to be a wet time period for much of East Texas. Rain will quickly overspread our area as we go through the afternoon. Here is the NAM forecast of rainfall at 3PM. We could be dealing with some brief heavy showers in some areas as we go through the afternoon. When you send your children off to school Friday morning, be sure they are bundled up and they have an umbrella or rain coat because it will be a cold rain & a wet commute by the afternoon. We cannot rule out a few rumbles of thunder as this system moves through, but no severe weather or winter weather is expected. Temperatures will be in the low 40s and middle 40s in Deep East Texas.
Unfortunately, we will start our weekend with rain continuing in East Texas through early Saturday morning. Showers will persist Friday evening with a few being some heavy rain producers.
Showers will last through early Saturday morning.
Saturday & Sunday
By Saturday morning, most rain activity is out of East Texas. We could have a few lingering showers, but otherwise it will be windy.
Temperatures will moderate to the upper 40s and lower 50s for Saturday. Note the wind barbs on the map below. These represent where the wind is coming from, and we will have a brisk north/northwest wind flow. Even with partly sunny skies and temperatures in the 40s to near 50, the wind chill will make it feel like the upper 30s and lower 40s.
Saturday night, I expect below freezing temperatures and another heavy frost likely for all of East Texas. Sunday will be cooler than Saturday but sunny skies and a nice day will take place with most areas in the upper 40s to near 50.
So while the first half of the weekend (Friday – Early Saturday morning) look unsettled with showers across East Texas, the second half promises to be dry, cool, but sunny.
